Iridology Explained with our Naturopath & Nutritionist Cassandra

by Cassandra Turp

What is Iridology?

Iridology is the art and science of analysing characteristics of the iris such as colour and structure to determine tissue integrity throughout the body, thereby gaining valuable health information regarding strengths and weaknesses, inflammation and level of vitality.

Naturopaths and iridologists study the iris of both eyes to obtain information about all parts of the body simultaneously. The iris may reveal inherited health dispositions, our tendency towards health problems, our current health conditions, and may caution us of what to be mindful of in the future.

Each part or zone of the iris relates to certain areas of the body and functions of particular systems such as the cardiovascular system, nervous system, digestion and the skin.
The fibres and patterns seen in the iris can help us to determine which areas may be affected and the level of vitality or impairment in that particular area. This gives us the ability to focus on the areas, which may need nurturing, correcting or protecting.

Iridology also looks at the colour and patterns within the sclera (the whites of the eye), which may indicate certain aspects of liver and gallbladder function and vascular health.

How is it performed?
Iridology is non-invasive, the practitioner will typically use a hand held iris torch called an otoscope to look into your eyes along with a specialised iridology camera to take digital pictures allowing the practitioner the ability to study the iris at length before completing the analysis.

Your appointment
Iridology forms part of a comprehensive case analysis and on its own is not a diagnostic tool. I use iridology along with other Naturopathic skills to determine a personalised treatment relevant to your health goals. An initial consultation requires one hour, in which a detailed case history, iris examination and your iris photos are taken. A return consultation is then required one week later whereby your treatment plan will be presented and discussed. This may include nutritional, herbal, dietary and lifestyle recommendations and or referrals if required.
