A thought on New Year Resolutions by our Life Coach Lesley McMillan

Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions?

Most times these ‘resolutions’ are just wishes dressed up in fireworks and champagne. A clear-cut goal with a well thought out action plan has a far better success rate on all 365 days of the year. To load the dice for success, it makes perfect sense to align your goal with what you value. Being clear on your Values is a critical exercise in knowing who you are and where your True North lies.

Here are some tips to get you on your way. Recognising your Values starts with asking yourself these questions:

What do I truly stand for? What kind of person am I? What is important to me?

How do I want to feel on a consistent basis?

What’s not to love about knowing your Values? Your Values are the compass guiding you towards your future. Decisions are so much easier when you are clear about what you value most within a situation or choice.

Try some of these Values on for size or contemplate others that ring true and resonate with you:

Love and Connection, Health & Fitness, Creativity, Contribution, Learning, Financial Security, Time in Nature, Travel & Adventure, Respect, Honesty, Peace, Spirituality, Fulfilment.

Time spent understanding your Values and ranking them by importance, is time well invested in your future. Goals that align with your Values become easier to set and plan for. For example, if Health and Fitness was a high priority Value and losing weight was your goal, focusing on loving and appreciating your body through good food and activity could be a more powerful motivator than fixating on how you look.

And when you feel tension around a decision, checking in with your Values helps point you towards the most aligned choice.

Any day is a great day to set new goals based on what you value!
