Biome Balance: Your 6 month journey to understanding your gut

By now you’ve probably heard the gut is important.

But what you may not know is, your bloating, unpredictable bowel habits, food sensitivities, reflux or ongoing digestive discomfort are actually giving you clues about what is happening beneath the surface.

And the answer isn’t simply cutting out more foods or taking another probiotic! Biome Balance is a personalised 6 month gut health program designed to look at the bigger picture — your symptoms, nutrition, nervous system, digestive function, blood markers and gut microbiome, and bringing these pieces together into a clear, individualised plan.

The program has been developed by Clinical Naturopath and Functional Medicine Practitioner Jessica Cruze, who has an Advanced Clinical Focus in gastrointestinal health and the gut microbiome.

So, who is Biome Balance for?

Biome Balance may be suitable if you’ve been experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms and feel like you’re constantly trying to work out what your gut needs.

It may be worth exploring if you experience:
• Persistent bloating, gas or abdominal distension
• Constipation or diarrhoea, or unpredictable bowel habits
• IBS-type symptoms
• Frequent abdominal pain or discomfort
• Reflux or heartburn
• Food sensitivities or a growing list of foods you feel you can’t tolerate
• Fatigue or low energy alongside digestive symptoms
• A history of trying elimination diets, or self-prescribing supplements or probiotics without achieving lasting change
• A desire to understand your gut microbiome rather than simply treating symptoms
• A feeling that your gut health is affecting your overall wellbeing

It’s the program for people who’ve tried a lot, or simply don’t know where to begin.

Your gut is more than your gut

Digestion doesn’t happen in isolation. Your nervous system, digestive secretions, nutrition, bowel motility, immune system and gut microbiome all interact with one another. That’s why Biome Balance doesn’t begin with a generic “gut healing” protocol. No two patients are the same. The first stage focuses on understanding you: your symptoms, history, lifestyle and current health picture, while establishing some simple foundations around nervous system regulation, sleep and eating behaviours. From there, the program progressively builds.

What happens during the 6 months?

Biome Balance is structured across six stages, with each stage building on the information and progress from the one before it.

Stage 1 — Comprehensive assessment

We start by getting to know your health history, symptoms, lifestyle and goals. Where appropriate, investigations such as baseline blood pathology, microbiome testing and cortisol testing may be recommended. The initial focus is on creating a calm foundation for digestion and providing appropriate support for your current symptoms.

Stage 2 — Pathology + nutrition review

Once we have more information, we can start connecting the dots. Your blood results, diet diary, bowel habits and symptoms are reviewed together to identify potential areas that may be contributing to your presentation.
This stage focuses on building strong and sustainable foundations of gut health.

Stage 3 — Gut microbiome review

This is where we take a closer look at the ecosystem living inside your gut. Your microbiome results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, digestive function, nervous system and other relevant health factors. At this stage, we’ll implement your personalised gut protocol based on your individual results.

Stage 4 — Midway review

At three months, we stop and look at what has changed.

Your symptoms, bowel function and blood markers can be compared with your starting point, while we review what is working, what has been challenging and where the focus needs to shift for the second half of the program. This stage is also about building momentum; refining your goals, introducing additional lifestyle strategies and progressively developing your nutrition and microbiome support.

Stage 5 — Building for the long term

By this point, the foundations have been in place for several months and we can start looking beyond immediate symptom management. We revisit your gut and nervous system, review digestive function and begin focusing more heavily on long-term health, habit layering and the foundations that help you maintain your progress.

Stage 6 — Graduation + maintenance plan

The final stage is about stepping back and looking at the journey as a whole. What has changed? What have we learnt about your body? What still needs attention? You’ll receive a maintenance toolkit and revised gut protocol, with a focus on helping you maintain your progress and reduce the likelihood of falling back into old patterns. From there, you can continue with individual consultations as needed or graduate from the program.

This isn’t about finding another list of foods you can’t eat

One of the biggest differences with Biome Balance is that the goal isn’t to keep your diet smaller and smaller. Instead, we want to understand why your gut is behaving the way it is. Your diet, symptoms, pathology and microbiome results all provide pieces of the puzzle. When those pieces are considered together, they can help guide a more personalised approach. And because your gut doesn’t exist in isolation, the program also considers the nervous system, sleep, movement, nutrition and other relevant areas of health along the way.

Meet Jess

Jessica Cruze is a degree-qualified Clinical Naturopath (Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy) and Functional Medicine Practitioner specialising in gastrointestinal health and the gut microbiome.

Her approach combines naturopathic medicine, functional testing, pathology interpretation, nutrition, herbal medicine and lifestyle strategies to investigate the potential drivers behind chronic digestive symptoms. Rather than simply asking “How do we manage this symptom?”, Jess’s approach is to ask:

What is this symptom trying to tell us?

From there, the aim is to investigate, understand and create a personalised plan that makes sense for the individual.

Curious about what your gut is trying to tell you?

If you’ve been dealing with digestive symptoms for months or years, or you’re simply tired of guessing what your gut needs, Biome Balance offers the opportunity to take a deeper look. It’s a supported, carefully staged process, not a quick fix. Sometimes the most useful thing we can do for your gut isn’t add another supplement or restrict more foods; it’s to consider your gut as just one part of the bigger picture of you.
